Presents Present Here
We might not have the Mega-Millions winner here in Lancaster but the last weeks of 2013 here will make everyone feel rich. On top of scheduled Music Friday events, for 12/20 over forty downtown galleries and merchants will extend their hours to support First Friday Redux. That nasty snow on 12/6 slushed out our typical First Friday art, music and merriment festivities so the town is rallying to host a night where we can celebrate the season and our good fortune.
What that means for you is an over-abundance of reasons to visit downtown Lancaster this weekend. If the holidays lend you an extra fondness for music and community spirit, be at Penn Square by 7pm on Friday 12/20. Besides the gorgeous light displays, you will be treated to a performance by the Music For Everyone Community Chorus just inside the lobby of the Marriott/Convention Center. Over sixty voices will combine to share seasonal and international music. The seasonal sing-along starts at 7:45. Be prepared for a scene much like the end of the animated “Grinch Who Stole Christmas.” MFE is a non-profit which seeks to enhance/perpetuate music education programs for schools/organizations who cannot fund or provide them on their own. Music For Everyone is also a perennial sponsor of our Music Fridays.
Can you rock in Lancaster this weekend without rocking around a Christmas tree? Oh yeah! Once the galleries have closed and you’ve found those last few unique, special, local-source gifts, you have plenty of options all weekend. Check MOOSE for a complete listing of sponsored Music Friday events. My Friday recommendation is Sweet Leda at Lancaster Dispensing Company 10pm. Besides being one of my favorite bands in one of my favorite places, I know it’s my last chance to see them locally before February. Sweet Leda will be the last act on the first night of Lancaster Roots and Blues 2/21/14: at Federal Taphouse at midnight! Tickets are on-sale downtown at Tellus 360 and CI Records. You can purchase online from the Lancaster Roots and Blues website or via Fig’s own Gift Local Guide.
Saturday night, Chameleon Club hosts an all-ages rock show that will reverberate long and loud. Local (soon to be national) favorites The Districts headline an amazing bill of rock that includes SEEDS, Pine Barons and Coronado. The Districts will be embarking on a national tour after the holidays in support of White Denim but play in the Lancaster/Philly region twice more besides the Chameleon show: 12/28 at Ardmore Music Hall with The Felice Brothers and 1/31/14 at The Electric Factory with Dr. Dog.
We love The Districts and I predict SEEDS could soon be just as popular. They will release their first full-length album 12/21 at the Chameleon show and it’s good stuff. You can read my review here but I highly recommend coming out to the show, seeing the band and buying your copy at the merch table. Consider getting it autographed. Both these bands could be interplanetary by the end of 2014.
Sunday will be pure fun. I can tell you why the forecast for Sunday is warm and sticky. Shrimpboat will be cooking up a hearty helping of soul and blues for an early-evening repast at Chameleon 7pm. Serious party-band Mama Tried will open the night. FYI Shrimpboat will be Lancaster's official party band on New Year's Eve AND headlining one night of Lancaster Roots and Blues at Chameleon. Enjoy the end of 2013 and remember that music makes a great gift! Prices for Lancaster Roots and Blues rise January 1, 2014 so stuff those stockings early! Live Music is Better!
