This Fig table feature has all the details you need to know before stopping by this market and exploring what it has in store!
The Look: Modern Marketplace
When you walk in The Freinschaft Market you instantly observe the classic general store feel with premium butchered meats on display. On one long, high wall is an assortment of jellies, jams, peanuts, candy, seasonings, pretzels, snacks, canned food, and other items available for purchase.
“The shop is geared towards grab and go,” said Josephine Stoltzfus, Owner of The Freinschaft Market. “Easy, convenient, quality foods. We want to make sure you feel comfortable and welcome coming through the door.”
There are designated sections for butchered meats, rotisserie meats, prepared foods, sandwich-making, and artisanal cheeses.
The prepared food area has freshly made soups, grab-and-go meals and snacks, and seasonal specials. The bar serves ready-to-order sandwiches with fresh ingredients and seasonal favorites.
The Menu: Savor The Fresh Flavor
“Most items in the store are geared towards small Pennsylvania businesses or products that have a great story behind them,” said Josephine.
For those wanting to grab breakfast or lunch, The Freinschaft Market sandwich menu is perfect. For breakfast try a delicious Tomato & Rosemary Egg Sandwich Panini (Scrambled Eggs, Sharp Provolone, Pesto, Tomato, Rosemary Olive Oil Bread). For lunch, try the Hammy Sammy (Pit-Style Ham, Cheddar, Mango Chutney, Greens, Tomato, Honey Whole Wheat Bread), the Twisted Bologna (Sweet Bologna, Swiss, Spicy Mustard, Greens, Tomato, Onion, Pumpernickel Bread) the Fancy Grilled Cheese Panini (Sharp Provolone, Mozzarella, Slow Roasted Tomatoes, Rosemary Olive Oil Bread) or build your own with an assortment of artisanal ingredients.
“I love making the sandwiches—both for myself and for our guests,” added Josephine. “The ingredients are quality ingredients. I think that making the sandwiches and playing around with flavor combinations has been really fun.”
This season, Freinschaft features delicious rotisserie chicken that is made in-house every day. All of the poultry offered is local, antibiotic free & hormone free.
“We also make all of our soups in-house,” said Josephine. “We refined are soup recipes and are excited to share them with guests.”
As for the assortment of meat, it’s hard to find this caliber elsewhere.
“A lot of people don’t realize that we are offering USDA grade Prime and Choice cuts,” said Josephine. “It’s high quality beef and we source Certified Angus when we can. We are excited to sell Prime Beef!”
The beef is coming from the Midwest region—known best for the beef it produces, and Freinschaft Market is focused on bringing the top-notch offerings to Lancaster.
Inside The Kitchen With Owner Josephine Stoltzfus
“My family has always had a market business,” said Josephine. “My grandparents had a farmers market shop and so did my parents—they were all farmers.”
Josephine wanted to capture that heritage legacy of her family and offer a similar kind of market, but with a modern twist.
“I am glad to offer a new market experience along with my brother, Josh who is one of our butchers,” added Josephine. “Josh and my dad operate a large butcher shop in Ardmore and I thought ‘hey, I think Lancaster needs a little opportunity like this.’”
Her family ties run deep, and Josephine is thankful to have that influence. This is also reflected in the name of the market—Freinschaft meaning ‘family” in Pennsylvania Dutch.
“We have a very tight knit family. My parents were born and raised Amish,” said Josephine. “We were brought up in a family that were both Amish relatives and common folk.”
Growing up, there was a lot of tradition surrounding food.
“Holidays are always a big thing,” said Jospehine. “My aunts, my cousins, my uncles, my grandparents—we always got together. I am not kidding you there is over 100 of us—so that is a lot of food.”
Family gatherings are special events that my whole family looks forward to.
“During the Holidays, my grandmother always makes a traditional Amish dish called Roasht,” said Josephine, smiling. “It’s this giant pot full of delicious moist stuffing with chicken and turkey mixed in.”
After working a full-time career in interior design for 15 years and a part-time job for the family market business for 10 years, Josephine embarked on the new adventure of opening The Freinschaft Market.
“I ultimately wanted a change and a new challenge,” she added. “Our main focus began as a butcher shop, but then we wanted to bring something else special for the lunch crowd—that is why we came up with the sandwich bar.”
