Meet The 2018 SCORE Small Business Award Recipients

Congratulations to all of the SCORE 2018 Small Business Award winners. The recipients were honored at the 2018 Small Business Awards Luncheon on April 24. The SCORE Lancaster-Lebanon chapter was also named SCORE National Chapter of the Year.

The annual SCORE Small Business Awards Luncheon showcases local business owners who are transforming the county. This year, SCORE was proud to award five different organizations that are doing good, cultivating community, and positively impacting Lancaster.

SCORE provides a variety of business mentorship opportunities, including one-on-one mentorship, small business advisory boards, tools and templates, business roundtables, educational programming, and more. In 2017, SCORE impacted over 630 new clients adding to over 790 clients total. SCORE also led over 90 workshops, over 2,400 mentoring sessions, and served close to 3,770 local entrepreneurs.

Recipient: Anne Kirby, Owner of The Candy Factory

    SCORE Mentor: Jerry Glenn

After feeling the effects of social isolation as a designer and marketer, Anne Kirby acknowledged the need for a collaborative community. She eventually founded The Candy Factory, a co-workering space that now inhabits 14,000 square feet of space in the historic Lancaster Storage Company.

Recipients: Jason and Sara Hurst, Owners of The Fence Experts

SCORE Mentors: Fred Engle, Joann Brayman, Eric Parker, and Dave Diffenderffer

Jason and Sara Hurst launches their company in January 2009 after Jason had been laid off during the economic downturn. Their mission was two-fold. First, they saw a real need for a quality manufacturer and installer of residential and commercial fencing in Chester, Montgomery, and Lancaster counties. Secondly, they wanted to create an enterprise where this business served a tool to build people, not one that used people as tools to build a business.

Recipients: Ezra Rothman, Operations Director, and Steve O’Neill, Director, at Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA)

SCORE Mentors: Kevin St. Cyr and Tim Douglas

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA) program in Lancaster is committed to providing free, high quality tax preparation to individuals and families making $62,000 or less, helping them save and reducing the anxiety of tax time.
