Lecture: The Whiskey Boys & The Watermelon Army

Beginning in 1791, farmers in western Pennsylvania protested the whiskey tax, an excise on distilled spirits imposed by the new federal Congress. Resistance grew into a rebellion that, by 1794, instigated an armed confrontation with the new national government. To suppress the uprising, President George Washington himself led a 13,000-man army into the field. The Whiskey Insurrection was more than a battle about taxes: it was nothing less than a contest over the meaning of the American Revolution. This lecture is being presented by Robyn Lily Davis, Ph.D., the Colonial and American Revolution specialist in the History Department at Millersville University. This event will be held in the Rock Ford Barn. No reservations are required. Seating is limited.

The event is free for members of the Rock Ford Foundation. $5 for non-members.

    Time: 5:00 pm -6:30 pm

Location: Rock Ford Plantation - 881 Rockford Road, Lancaster, PA 17602

    Lancaster Craft Beerfest

The 2017 Lancaster Craft Beerfest is brought to you by Joycat Events, a company formed by three Lancaster natives. We have partnered with the City of Lancaster Office of Promotion (LOOP) and the Federal Taphouse to bring this great event to the beer enthusiasts of Lancaster County and it’s neighbors.

On August 26th, the fifth annual Lancaster Craft Beerfest is returning to the vibrant, growing, and creative city of Lancaster. The last four years were successful and we look forward to bringing another fun event this year. Our goal is to provide craft beer drinkers with an amazing selection of unique beers so they can discover new and old favorites. There will be dozens of options from some of the best breweries, including those right in our neighborhood and from across the country. Not only will there be craft beer, there will be great food and live music to enjoy as well.

All of this will be conveniently located in the heart of downtown Lancaster. Thanks to our partner, LOOP, we’ll be closing down the 100 block of North Queen Street and holding the festival in Binns Park and Lancaster Square Park. We’ll have breweries in Binns Park and Lancaster Square, a “food court” and various craft beer related venders on North Queen Street, and live music playing in Binns Park. For many residents of Lancaster City this means the festival will just be a short walk away. For non-city residents there are parking garages and hotels within two blocks of the beerfest. The Hotel Lancaster is attached to the venue, if your’e interested in a room, please call 717-394-0900 and reference the name Beerfest2017. These rooms are based upon availability.

    Time: 4:00 pm -7:30 pm

Location: 100 Block of North Queen Street

Long’s Park Summer Concert Series – Dale Watson

Now in its 55th season, the Summer Music Series is regarded as a top musical entertainment destination in one of the best outdoor venues in Central PA. These free concerts are made possible through the generosity of individuals and corporate partners. Proceeds from the Long’s Park Art Festival are the other important component to our funding process.

People power pulls it all together! Through the efforts of hundreds of volunteers and guided by a dedicated Board of Directors, the Long’s Park Amphitheater Foundation is excited to offer these outstanding performances. Thank you for being a part of this wonderful community event.

Dale Watson, keeper of the true country music flame, latest album Call Me Insane, was recorded in Austin with veteran producer Lloyd Maines (Robert Earl Keen, Jerry Jeff Walker, etc.). The Austin-based honky-tonker carries on in the tradition of Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson with his “Ameripolitan” brand of American roots music.

Album highlights include “Jonesin’ For Jones,” a love song to the music of the legendary George Jones, “A Day At A Time,” about “getting by by barely getting by;” “Call Me Insane,” the album’s moody title track; “Bug Ya For Love,” a fun warning to all the single ladies, and “Mamas Don’t Let Your Cowboys Grow Up To Be Babies.” (Yes, it is an answer song to the Waylon Jennings/Willie Nelson hit.) “Crocodile Tears” is a tear-in-your-beer country song that sounds like an instant classic and “Burden Of The Cross” reveals Watson’s serious side.

Plain Meetinghouses: Old Order Mennonites Gather to Worship

LancasterHistory.org is pleased to kick off our fall season of the Regional History Colloquium series on Thursday, September 14 with Beth Oberholtzer presenting on Plain Meetinghouses: Old Order Mennonites Gather to Worship. Old Order Mennonites are deeply faithful, agrarian-rooted, Swiss-German Anabaptists who have called Lancaster County home for 300 years. Their meetinghouses silently embody their religious traditions, and yet few outsiders have seen the startling utilitarian beauty of these rural structures up close. Author Beth Oberholtzer and photographer John Herr were allowed rare access to 22 austere houses of worship and join us to discuss the extraordinary religious heritage of this Old Order way of life.

Beth Oberholtzer is a book designer, editor, and author from Lancaster, Pennsylvania. She has written and photographed books about grain painting, crazy quilt stockings, and appliqued wall hangings. John Herr is an architecture photographer, also from Lancaster County, whose work portrays contemporary and historic buildings. His images are reminders that fine buildings are community assets to be valued and preserved. Beth and John are tenth- and eleventh-generation descendants of Swiss-German Mennonites who in the early 1700s escaped religious persecution and settled in Lancaster County.

This event takes place in Ryder Hall at LancasterHistory.org. A social gathering and book signing begins at 4pm, followed by the presentation at 4:30pm. The event is free and open to the public. Ample parking available on-site.

The Mosaic Project: Amber Robles Gordon and Nate Lewis

The significance of art in the lives of our youth cannot be underestimated. Yet, just when research is finally emerging that supports this, budget cuts and curricular demands are threatening the foundation of creativity in our public schools. In order to fill that gap as well as enrich the community, Pennsylvania College of Art & Design developed The Mosaic Project, a multicultural exhibition and education program for students and families in Lancaster County.

Amber Robles-Gordon, is a mixed media visual artist. She primarily works and is known for her use of found objects and textile to create assemblages, large-scale sculptures and installations. Her work is representational of her experiences and the paradoxes within the female experience.

Nate Lewis is a self taught artist, drawing inspiration from anatomy, physiology, disease processes and his nursing experience as a care taker of patients and their family members he creates stunning, intricate 2-3d sculptures out of single sheets of paper that visually combines the aesthetics of drawing, sculpture, etching, embroidery, and textiles.

Pumpkin: The Curious History of an American Icon

Celebrate autumn harvest season with LancasterHistory.org on Thursday, October 5. Professor Cindy Ott joins us to present Pumpkin: The Curious History of an American Icon. Why do so many Americans drive for miles each autumn to buy a vegetable that they are unlikely to eat? Americans have used the pumpkin to fulfill their desire to maintain connections to nature and to the family farm of lore, and small farms and rural communities have been revitalized in the process. While the pumpkin has inspired American myths and traditions, the pumpkin itself has changed because of the ways people have perceived, valued, and used it. Pumpkin is a smart and lively study of the deep meanings hidden in common things and their power to make profound changes in the world around us. Having done research in Lancaster County, Professor Ott will explore the fascinating history of the pumpkin and its connections to southeastern Pennsylvania.

Image of Cindy Ott.Cindy Ott is an associate professor in the history department and museum studies program at the University of Delaware. Her fields of expertise are American food and culture, U.S. environmental history, history and memory, and material and visual culture. Along with her book Pumpkin: The Curious History of an American Icon (2012), she has published articles on urban gardens, food reform movements, Indian and non-Indian relations, visual and material culture, and landscape and memory. She is the President of the Society of Fellows at the Rachel Carson Center for Environment and Society based in Munich, Germany, and a member of the executive committee of the American Society for Environmental History. Cindy is currently writing a book entitled Biscuits and Buffalo: Squashing Myths about Food in Indian Country.

This event takes place in Ryder Hall at LancasterHistory.org. A social gathering begins at 4pm, followed by the presentation at 4:30pm. The event is free and open to the public. Ample parking available on-site.
