Local Visionary – Dr. Pam Tieszan

Introducing you to the people and places that make Lancaster special is our mission. In the spring edition of Fig, you met some of our friends who are forging new paths and are selflessly committed to our community. Now, more than ever, we want to show our appreciation.

Dr. Pam Tieszan – Superintendent, Lancaster Mennonite

“As a non-native Lancastrian, I am so impressed with the vibrant culture, diversity, thriving art scene, and creative individualism that is encouraged and flourishing in Lancaster City. The renovation and re-imagination of older buildings into restaurants, co-working spaces, and community centers is inspiring.”

“At Lancaster Mennonite (LM), 27% of our students and a large percentage of our employees live in the City. LM people are living out their faith and engaged here. Annually, they participate in the YWCA Race Against Racism (we were awarded the biggest group last year!), and volunteer at organizations in  the City like Community Action Partnership, Lancaster County Food Hub, and Church World Service. A student’s education doesn’t happen in isolation, but in community. It’s important for our students to be connected to broader opportunities outside the traditional classroom walls.”

"I am passionate about supporting the local community of nonprofits, artists, and businesses. I am amazed by how many local businesses serve the community and also honor their agricultural roots by buying from local farmers, supporting refugees, and engaging social issues."

“I envision growing our mentorship and partnership opportunities for our students and teachers with local STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) organizations and individuals, especially through the great leadership and educational resources the Lancaster Chamber provides. I hope LM can tap into the creative ingenuity in the City to encourage our students to start businesses or nonprofits that will inspire and change the world.”

    Passion Project:

I am passionate about supporting and encouraging the arts and creativity. I frequent the Fulton Theatre and was especially thrilled to see an LM student as a Lost Boy in their recent production of Peter Pan.

    Reason for Gratitude:

I am immensely grateful for the creative programming and special connections our teachers make with students every day.
