60 years of sweet music at Long’s Park Ampitheater

In 1957, Civitas (then known as Sertoma) came together with an idea to bring beautiful music to Lancaster’s Long’s Park through the construction of an amphitheater. With the expertise of Wickersham Construction & Engineering, the amphitheater was built and dedicated in 1962, kicking off a 60-year history of musical arts and culture for the community.

Although programming has changed over the years, the summer music series has been a staple piece of Long’s Park since that dedication, eventually settling on Sunday evenings for families to load up their picnic blankets and lawn chairs to experience the variety of music the Long’s Park Amphitheater Foundation (LPAF) is proud to present.

Dave Wauls, President of LPAF, reflected on the 60th anniversary and the music series’ impact, saying, “The series give anyone and everyone the opportunity to come to the park and enjoy music, and music they may not have experienced before.” Wauls also celebrates that because of sponsorships and funds raised through the annual Art Festival, the concerts are free for all.

David Nace, President of Wickersham, who has stayed involved in the maintenance of the amphitheater over the years, said, “From my personal perspective, it is very unique for a community of our size to be able to offer entertainment of the caliber that Long’s Park provides to the community free of charge.”

Wauls and the Foundation are excited for the future of the amphitheater as the concert series stays true to the mission of providing great music from all genres for the entire community to experience.

The 2022 Summer Music Series starts June 5!
