Experience the Difference at the New Penn State Health Lancaster Medical Center

Dr. Michael Reihart, director of emergency services at Penn State Health Lancaster Medical Center, talks with a patient.

Penn State Health has a long history of caring for Lancaster County families at primary and specialty care practices throughout the county. Now, Penn State Health Lancaster Medical Center expands access to exceptional care from the providers community residents know and trust.

“We are committed to providing the people of Lancaster County with world-class primary, specialty and acute care, closer to home where it’s most convenient for them,” said Joe Frank, Penn State Health East Region hospital president.

The new medical center, which opened Oct. 3, offers expert emergency care and inpatient medical, surgical and obstetric services and advanced diagnostics. The six-story, 132-bed hospital is conveniently located off state Route 283 in East Hempfield Township and has ample free parking.

    Expert emergency care
When emergencies happen, it’s reassuring to have expert care close to home. Lancaster Medical Center’s Emergency Department is a full-service unit staffed by a dedicated and experienced emergency medicine team. Nurses staff the care initiation rooms and evaluate patients as soon as they arrive to determine the level of treatment they need.

For individuals who come to the Emergency Department following a sexual assault, specially trained nurse examiners provide compassionate care in a dedicated, private area.

    Patient- and family-focused care
“When someone comes to Lancaster Medical Center, they’re not just ‘the patient in bed 42,’” said Claire Mooney, the hospital’s senior vice president and chief operating officer who spent the first half of her medical career as a nurse. “Instead, they’re ‘Mrs. Smith, whose husband and daughter are in her room with her right now.’ Patients here are cared for by our staff in a way they’ve never experienced before.”

Patients find private patient rooms that are spacious, light-filled and feature the latest technology, including online entertainment and education via their TV. Several rooms are specially equipped to support the needs of bariatric patients. All of the patient rooms in the Medical Surgical Unit are private, creating a quieter stay and supporting nurses’ ability to get to know their patients and their needs.

Lancaster Medical Center’s Intensive Care Unit rooms are uniquely designed to make it easy for staff to bring in any special equipment needed for their patients. And with seven operating suites, including a hybrid operating room, the hospital’s state-of-the-art surgical services support both emergency needs and inpatient and outpatient procedures.

    Care for growing families
Opening in November, Lancaster Medical Center’s Family Birthing Suite will offer comprehensive care for the many ways families are created, including surrogacy and adoption. Triage rooms, private labor rooms with hydrotherapy tubs, a C-section operating room and spacious ante- and post-partum rooms will give parents-to-be and their partners unparalleled comfort, privacy and support. If their newborn needs advanced neonatal specialty services, they’ll receive coordinated care from the experts at Penn State Health Children’s Hospital in Hershey, equipped with central Pennsylvania’s only Level IV neonatal intensive care unit.

From initial concept through the construction and opening of Lancaster Medical Center, the focus has been on providing a peaceful, patient-centered environment for healing. Patients and visitors alike are greeted at nearly every turn and in their private rooms by artwork from Pennsylvania artists. The pieces were curated to support a sense of comfort and belonging by reflecting the community the hospital serves.
