Creative community is at the heart of West Art

Their recently opened all-day espresso bar rounds out the artful and intentional offerings at this reimagined historic space.

Fresh Face

A living room for Lancaster. A sanctuary for the arts.

That’s the mantra that guides West Art, one of the newest gathering spaces in Lancaster City. Transformed by neighborsturned- business partners Rufus Deakin and Josh Gibbel, the historic church now houses dynamic venue spaces and an all-day espresso bar, which also serves a well curated menu of wine, beer, and cocktails, along with plenty of spirit-free options.

Although the plans for the space evolved since the creative duo saw a ‘for sale’ sign in the lawn and began discussing dreams over their shared backyard fence, they both brought experience in renovations and a passion for music, art, and community to the project.

Rufus, a Lancaster transplant originally from London, worked as a chef for nearly two decades before renovating properties in London, Spain, and now Lancaster, where his wife is from. Josh is a Lancaster native with experience in HR and home renovations.

This helped them take a thoughtful approach to creating West Art—retaining the rich character, stunning stained glass, and industrial elements in the space while breathing new life into it with artistic touches, communal seating, and state-of-the-art technology for concerts and other community events hosted in the two former sanctuaries.

“The heartbeat of the project has always been to be a safe place for the community,” Josh shared. “We are excited to invite people to gather in an inspiring space, over whatever drink you prefer, and experience different aspects of the arts here.”

“This is a third space for people of all generations, from all walks of life,” Rufus added. “To have conversations, play games, listen to music, watch theater, have a coffee or a beer—to really feel at home.”

As for West Art’s event lineup, Josh and Rufus are excited to host local artists, touring bands, and a variety of community events.

“There’s something about the physical space and the warmth of our team that provides a really special experience for artists,” Josh said. “When artists feel comfortable and more inspired, they play the music with a little extra something. And we are excited to make space to create those magic moments.”

Stop by for a drink from 7AM to 10PM daily and find an event that excites you on their upcoming events calendar—you’re always welcome at West Art.
