Drink More Art: The Story of Barone Sergio & Vine Bar

Try five of Barone Sergio's artisan wines at Vine Bar this fall.

At Vine Bar, owner Justina Latura and her team like to say “Drink More Art.” It’s more than a slogan—it’s a philosophy. Every bottle tells a story, every label carries an aesthetic vision, and every sip is an act of creative expression. Nowhere is that more true than at Barone Sergio, an artisanal winery in Pachino, Sicily, where the world of wine and the world of art are inseparably entwined.

Where Wine Meets Murals

The walls of Barone Sergio’s winery aren’t just stone and plaster; they’re canvases alive with murals. This creative dimension began with Luigia Sergio’s vision of connecting art to wine labels. Angela Sergio added her own layer by linking these works of art to the winery’s deeper values, especially the cultivation of Lucignola, an ancient heritage grape the sisters are helping revive.

“One mural in particular, “The Women of the Water,” created in 2023, depicts real women who worked the fields in the 1950s,” Angela explains. “The painting gives you the feeling that these women are walking toward you, as if evoked from the past into the present. In the same way, the Lucignola grape has returned from the past into the present.”

The result is an environment where visitors can sip wine at sunset in front of vibrant art, making the story of Barone Sergio not just tasted but also seen and felt.

The Artistic Process

For Luigia, art and wine share the same creative DNA. “We have always nurtured a passion for art, especially when it involves supporting young artists,” she says. “We believe that art, much like wine, follows a creative process that is deeply personal yet open to the world.”

The winery collaborates with young artists to design its labels, giving them full creative freedom. “It’s essential to choose an artist whose values align with ours,” Luigia notes. “The real work lies in that initial search.” The result is labels that balance freshness and authenticity, serving as visual preludes to the wines inside.

“Every wine is an expression of its maker and, in its own right, a form of art,” adds Luigia. “From the same grapes, countless variations can emerge—it’s the choices made along the way that shape its personality and character. Just like in art, the same image can be told in a thousand different ways.”

Sustainability as Respect

Both sisters agree: Sustainability is not just about farming. “Sustainability is a form of respect for the land,” says Luigia. From bottle weight and cardboard to vineyard practices and the murals themselves, sustainability means making choices that care for both environment and community.

Angela connects this to a broader narrative: Rediscovering their family history through documents dating back to the 1800s, while experimenting with resistant and ancient varietals like Lucignola to face modern challenges such as climate change. “We represent a bridge between past and present,” she reflects.

A Shared Vision with Vine Bar

At Vine Bar, they are proud to share these stories. When guests in Lancaster taste Barone Sergio wines, they’re stepping into an artistic, agricultural, and human story rooted in Sicily.

Luigia sums it up beautifully: “When tasting our wines and learning our story, I hope they sense the craftsmanship behind every bottle. That they feel the care, passion, and respect for the land that gave birth to them.”

For Vine Bar, this is what Drink More Art really means. Because wine that is more than beverage—it’s history, philosophy, and creativity in a glass.
