Get to Know LCSWMA

Located in the heart of Lancaster, the Transfer Station Complex is the nucleus of the Lancaster County Solid Waste Management Authority (LCSWMA). It’s not only the location of their Main Office, it’s where much of the solid waste from the county comes to be sorted and transferred to other locations including their two waste-to-energy facilities, the Frey Farm Landfill, and a private recycling center.

Although most Lancastrians don’t ponder what happens to their trash after it leaves the curb, it’s all LCSWMA thinks about. Their number one priority is how to best receive, process, transport, manage, dispose, and recycle nearly one million tons of solid waste annually. Not only that, but they’re always thinking about how to use waste as a resource for the community and create renewable energy.

As commercial haulers and residents come in and out of the Transfer Station Complex all day delivering household refuse, construction and demolition materials, tires, refrigerators, paint, household hazardous waste, and more, most of their 400 daily customers never notice the renewable energy projects around them. They are surprised to learn that 80 percent of the Transfer Station Complex is powered by the 2,000 solar panels on its roofs. If customers take a closer look, they will notice a compressed natural gas (CNG) fueling station. This alternative fuel source offers a reduction in air emissions and powers LCSWMA’s transfer fleet and other commercial fleets in our area.
