This October, Milagro House will welcome New York Times bestselling author Stephanie Land to Lancaster! Stephanie’s memoir, Maid: Hard Work, Low Pay and a Mother’s Will to Survive is an unflinching, personal account of poverty and motherhood that has touched the hearts of people all over the world. Her book inspired the Emmy-nominated Netflix series Maid, giving millions of viewers a front row seat to the challenges that complicate the labyrinth of systems people experiencing poverty in the United States must navigate to simply survive.

An Evening with Stephanie Land will take place at the Fulton Theatre (Main Stage) on Tuesday Evening, October 25, 2022 at 7:00 pm, followed by a book signing and dessert reception. Stephanie’s story is opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the destructive, intergenerational cycle of poverty and its ripple effect on individuals, families and on our community as a whole. It is a stepping off point for the important conversations we must have to effectively address the reasons why systems and resources built to help, often make it difficult for people (particularly women and children) to climb out of poverty and homelessness.

Stephanie’s experience mirrors the journey of every woman at Milagro House. Her eventual access to educational opportunities gave her the chance to move herself and her daughter from poverty and homelessness to a sustainable future.

At the heart of the Milagro House program is removing the barriers to education women in poverty face. For 25 years, Milagro House has opened its doors to mothers with children who are facing homelessness. Women live at Milagro House with their children at no cost. While at Milagro House, they have an opportunity to complete their education, explore careers and job opportunities, network with local employers through job shadowing and mentoring, as well as strengthen skills and knowledge in budgeting, parenting, healthy relationships and nutrition.

Each woman’s educational journey and unique circumstances are supported by a scaffolding of services that include counseling, case management, advocacy and connections to community resources that empower women to leverage their education and skills to obtain a job at a family-sustaining wage. It is in the journey of each mother and child that we see miracles happen, big and small, each and every day.
