PAVAA Gallery celebrates 10 years
Established in 2015, PAVAA has provided a platform for Afrocentric art and performance, showcasing the rich cultural heritage of African communities worldwide.

As we celebrate Black History Month, we recognize the influence of Black-owned businesses in the arts here in Lancaster City. One standout example is PAVAA Gallery. Established in 2015, PAVAA has provided a platform for Afrocentric art and performance for a decade, showcasing the rich cultural heritage of African communities worldwide.
The Vision Behind PAVAA Gallery

PAVAA Gallery was founded by Gerri McCritty, Marion “CoCo” Coleman, and Tyrell Hoff. The trio’s mission was clear: To create a space where they could nurture their talents and provide a platform for others. Drawing from their diverse skills in visual arts, spoken word, African drumming, and jazz vocals, they envisioned a place that celebrated African-rooted artistry. Their dream began with the purchase of a modest two-story building, where the first floor was an empty warehouse space that they transformed into an intimate gallery and performance venue. Despite no prior experience running an art gallery, they leveraged their creativity and determination to build PAVAA into a unique cultural hub in Lancaster City.
PAVAA’s Purpose and Mission

What sets PAVAA Gallery apart from other art spaces in Lancaster is its strong Afrocentric focus. The gallery proudly showcases artists and performers whose work is deeply rooted in Africanism, whether through visual art, music, dance, or spoken word. PAVAA is dedicated to offering a platform to both local and international artists, providing a space where Afrocentric art is not only appreciated but celebrated. The gallery offers:
- A collection of visual and wearable art by African artist Gerri McCritty and other featured artists
- A home for African and Afrocentric entertainment, including music, dance, and performance
- Opportunities for art lovers to meet the artists and purchase cultural artwork
- A resource for the Lancaster community—providing a venue for meetings, performances, and workshops

- Promoted diversity through speaker engagements by Dr. Marion “CoCo” Coleman, whose expertise in multicultural affairs has opened important conversations on diversity and cross-cultural issues
National Recognition and Expanding Horizons

PAVAA’s reach has extended beyond Lancaster, with founder Gerri McCritty gaining recognition for her artistic contributions. She has been commissioned for various projects, including creating a two-story mural for the United Universalist Church of Lancaster, original sculptures for Music For Everyone, and artwork for the Penn Medical Health Center.
In addition to her local accomplishments, Gerri has been invited to exhibit at prestigious venues, including The Ware Center, Demuth Museum, Central Penn College, and the Lancaster Art Vault.
A significant milestone for PAVAA occurred in 2023, when Gerri realized her dream of connecting Lancaster to her home country of Liberia in West Africa. She organized a trip that brought people together to begin building relationships between Liberian and Lancaster artists. Another trip is planned for 2025, expanding PAVAA’s global influence and fostering cultural exchange.
The Future of PAVAA Gallery

With its ongoing contributions, including year-round exhibits, workshops, and performances, PAVAA is poised for an exciting future. The gallery remains a vital resource for cultural exchange, offering opportunities for future generations to engage with African-rooted art.
