Fundamentals of Oil Painting A One-Day Workshop with Blair Atherholt
November 15 @ 10:00 am – 5:00 pm

The Workshop In this one-day workshop, we will explore the fundamental skills of traditional oil painting. In this class we will all – myself included – work step-by-step through the process of painting a single, basic shape with a limited palette of three colors (Titanium White, Raw Umber, and Ivory Black). We’ll work through this painting together, learning and applying the following tenets of traditional realism and how I apply them in oils: – The Parts of Light and How to Utilize Them to Show Form – Using Line Drawing as an Underpainting – Basics of Paint Mixing – Application of Paint Painting monochromatically with a limited palette has traditionally served as the first step in an art student’s progression through their painting education. It allows the student to focus on the fundamentals of light, form, drawing, paint mixing, and paint application before wading into the complex world of color. Practicing in this way is crucial in establishing a solid foundation in and level of comfort with the challenging medium that is oil paint. How the Class Works: The class will follow a step-by-step format. I’ll demonstrate each stage of the painting process while explaining my methods and thought process. Students can observe, ask questions, and then apply that step to their own work with my guidance and feedback. Once everyone has finished, I’ll demonstrate the next stage. By the end of the day, each student will have a completed painting.
