October brings horror to PDF at Zoetropolis with Jordan Peele’s acclaimed Get Out. What begins as an awkward weekend visit to the family of Chris’s white girlfriend gradually becomes a distinctly American nightmare. Blending horror, satire, mystery, and comedy, Peele turns familiar genre conventions inside out while exploring race, liberal self-congratulation, bodily autonomy, and the difference between being noticed and being recognized as a person.

Our Halloween-month screening opens the final sequence of the yearlong America 250 film series, Reckoning & Futurity: What Are We Still Fighting For? As the series moves toward its conclusion, Get Out asks whether America’s history of racial domination has disappeared or simply assumed more polite and apparently inclusive forms.

The evening will include a brief prescreening presentation placing the film within Black horror and the America 250 theme, followed by the screening and an audience discussion. Our specialty cocktail will be The Garden Party, featuring Lancaster Distilleries Rose Geranium Gin, lemon, honey, and soda. Join us for an evening of philosophy, drinks, film, and a horror story whose monsters are disturbingly close to home.
