Influenced by his grandmother’s impeccable taste, Norman discovered a love for well-curated spaces early in life. As a creative thinker with a natural inclination towards the arts, when it came time to pick a career path, interior design was an obvious choice.
Norman grew up in Lancaster County before attending design school in York, Pennsylvania. After graduating in 1993, he sought out a diverse range of experiences to build his career—from working at luxury design firms in Philadelphia, to visual merchandising and store planning for Boscov’s. Closer to home, Norman was Director of Design for an architectural firm based in Leola, designing several commercial projects in the area.
After accumulating nearly 30 years of experience in the profession, he decided it was time to begin a new journey. In 2020, he launched his own design company, Norman Kohl Interiors.
“I have a wide range of projects in my portfolio, and you won’t find a signature style among them,” Norman said. “I offer a full-service approach, and my clients are getting the whole package in one person.”
Norman handles everything from space planning, to designing interior architecture, such as millwork details, lighting layouts, and cabinetry. He also creates custom window treatments, and sources the perfect fabrics, furniture, and accessories to complete a space.
“I tend to work with clients that prefer a more seasoned approach to design,” Norman said. “I strive to add depth, character, and comfort in a layered way. Sometimes I am asked to incorporate my client’s heirloom pieces, so it’s also about mixing old and new in an artful way.”
At the start of a new project, whether they’re looking for a new kitchen layout or a more modern bathroom design, an appointment is scheduled to survey the home and better understand his clients’ vision. After the initial meeting, Norman returns to his office to process the information and begins sketching possibilities. Taking a thoughtful approach to each project, he seeks out local vendors to fulfill the design intent. For Norman, design is always a team effort.
Since starting his company, Norman has been drawing on his years of experience to help people create a forever home, or help them remain in their space even as their stages of life change.
“I have a diverse client base, but many tend to be homeowners in their 50s and 60s that are soon to be empty-nesters,” Norman said. “Many love their home and wish to age in place, or they finally have the time and resources to enhance or build their dream home.”
Regardless of the scope or style of a project, Norman Kohl Interiors is dedicated to producing dynamic, timeless design that reflects his client’s needs and lifestyle.
