Fresh Face: Bert and The Elephant

Bert and The Elephant is a Belgian-style cafe serving up Belgian and Trappist beers.

Fresh Face

Inspired by his travels, Alberto “Bert” Flores is establishing a new gathering place with an international twist for beer aficionados called Bert and The Elephant. With his affinity for true Belgian and Trappist beers, Bert decided to introduce Lancaster to the brews he fell in love with while exploring the beer scene abroad.

Modeled after classic Belgian cafes, Bert and The Elephant will make its home on King Street in Lancaster City. With Belgian bites, cozy tables, a 30-foot handcrafted wooden bar, and a hearty selection of Belgian and American craft beer, Bert and The Elephant will be a dynamic space for people making their way downtown to shop, dine, or spend time with friends.

“It’s about the experience,” Bert says. “It’s about disconnecting from your electronics and connecting with your people.”

Prior to his career in the restaurant industry, Bert spent 32 years working in IT. With an extroverted personality, Bert saw himself as an outlier in the field and wanted a career that would give him more human connection.

“I love to interact with people,” Bert said. “I love to teach people about beer. And what I like to tell people is that not every beer is for everyone, but there is a beer for every person.”

Bert and The Elephant will have a focus on Belgian beer because, in Bert’s opinion, they are the most approachable brews for people who want to expand their palate. Bert and his team are excited to introduce the concept to Lancaster.
