Fresh Face

The opening of Pizzeria 211‘s first standalone restaurant in Lancaster City is more than a move for more space. It’s the culmination of owner Matthew Shultz taking a risk on his dream.

Matthew is a Millersville native who spent the first two decades of his career in Philadelphia working in jewelry before turning his attention to pizza. Inspired by dynamic pizza shops opening in Philadelphia around the late 2010s, he started experimenting at home. He then joined a local Philly spot during 2020 to get more hands-on kitchen experience.

“I just completely immersed myself in piz za,” he reminisced. “I worked all the time with this cr ew of misfits who came from all walks of life because of the v olatile job market during COVID.”

Shortly into 2021, a collection of perspective-shifting events drew Matthew and his wife back t o Lancaster, giving him that push to pursue a second career where he could inspire happiness in those around him. Matthew soon got connected with the team working to reopen Southern Market as a business incubator and food hall.

“I remember reaching out to Steve Wood, who was leading the efforts to open their bar program, and asking, ‘Can I just make you a pizza?’” he shared.

It wasn’t long before Matthew was offered the front restaurant space for Pizzeria 211, named after the street address in Philly where he first started honing recipes for signature Detroit-style pies.

Fast forward nearly four years, Pizzeria 211 has a faithful following among locals and is a destination spot for visit ors from surrounding areas—a credit to Matthew’s determination to bring people quality food and mak e his family proud.

The new restaurant, which is taking over the former home of the Sugar Bowl, is designed to be a true neighborhood establishment. Matthew’s vision is to expand their menu, bringing back their much-requested cheesesteaks, as well as extend hours so you can bring friends and family on a night out to their new dining room area.

“Pizza is such a universal food—everyone loves it,” he said. “My goal is to continue making really good food, create a place where anyone is welcome, and build a legacy I’m truly proud of.”
