Hairspray takes the stage at Fulton Theatre

Get a behind-the-scenes look at the upcoming show from director and choreographer, Kenneth E. Ingram, along with starring actress, Eden Franco.

You can’t stop the beat at Fulton Theatre’s upcoming production of Hairspray the Musical. From April 10 through May 3, 2026, step back into the ’60s with this big and bold family-friendly musical.

Meet Tracy Turnblad

At the heart of Hairspray is Tracy Turnblad, the bubbly and optimistic teen who is marked by her unwavering belief in doing what’s right. For actress Eden Franco, stepping into the role feels both natural and deeply personal.

“I would like to think that I possess a lot of the same qualities as Tracy: determination, joy, and passion,” she said. “It’s truly been an honor to step into her shoes.”

For director Kenneth E. Ingram, that connection was clear from the very first audition. “She carried a light in her eyes, and her spirit exuded the joy of Tracy,” he recalled. “Eden embodies and embraces that naturally, and it really inspires me.”

Despite Tracy’s persona coming easily, Eden shares the role still presents new challenges. “As a plus size, Jewish woman like Tracy but living in today’s world, I feel the consistent pressure of the world I’ve lived in,” she shares. “Every time I walk into the rehearsal room, I know I’m doing a fun show with singing and dancing—but it’s much more than that.”

That awareness shapes her approach to the role. “I’m leading a show that deals with relevant issues,” Eden says, “and it’s my responsibility to portray them with the same passion I feel every day.”

More Than Just a Musical

Though Hairspray is widely known for its upbeat score and lively performances, both Eden and Kenneth emphasize that its message runs much deeper.

“We are living in a world where hate runs rampant, but we have the power to stand together and change it,” Kenneth explained. “Hairspray wants audiences to not judge someone for what’s on the outside, but for what is inside their heart.”

One of the show’s most powerful moments comes in Act 2 during “I Know Where I’ve Been,” a musical number that continues to resonate far beyond its 1960s setting.

“We are living in a world that’s not so different to Tracy’s,” Kenneth said. “I have no doubt that audiences will be moved by this moment.”

He resonates with that perspective, pointing to the show’s reflection of today’s social climate. “I hope the community will see that we all could be kinder to each other,” he added.

Despite the weight of the themes, the message Eden hopes audiences take away is ultimately one of joy and unity. “I hope audiences recognize that hate has no place in our world,” Eden said. “And that we can all come together, celebrate our differences, and have fun while doing it.”

Hairspray stands out not only for its message, but also for its fast-paced, high-energy music and dancing—leaving audiences feeling uplifted as well as inspired. This production of the Tony Award-winning musical is brings a mix of familiar Fulton performers and new faces making their debut in Lancaster, creating a dynamic and inclusive ensemble.

“This cast is particularly special because there is a good mix of people,” Eden shared. “It’s great to have cast in the show who audiences can come and support on stage in their own city.”

For Eden, performing at the Fulton Theatre is a milestone moment. “It’s been a dream come true,” she says. “I just feel like the luckiest girl in the world.”
