Things to Do
I’m Walking A Mile In Her Shoes. Here’s How You Can Too!
Help raise awareness of sexual assault and violence while supporting YWCA efforts to help victims.
On Friday, June 15, I’m wearing heels. And I’m ready.
The YWCA Lancaster is proud to bring back the “Walk A Mile in Her Shoes” event to Tellus360 on Friday June 15, a fundraising mile-long walk benefitting the Sexual Assault Prevention and Counseling Center (SAPCC) at YWCA Lancaster.

You will need to register, create a team page (and team!), and begin raising money. More details below!
- Event: “Walk A Mile in Her Shoes”

- Day-of Details: Registration at 4pm at Tellus360, Walk begins at 6pm in Penn Square. After-party will be at Tellus360 directly after walk, with food, drinks, and free foot massages!
The proceeds from this event support the Sexual Assault Prevention and Counseling Center (SAPCC) at YWCA Lancaster. Serving as the designated rape crisis center for Lancaster County, SAPCC provides professional trauma based counseling, medical and legal advocacy, and a 24-hour sexual assault hotline for victim survivors and their family members. All services are provided at no cost—so these funds raised from “Walk A Mile in Her Shoes” greatly impacts the program’s success.
Time To Make a Team!
I’m ready to support this great cause—albeit a little nervous to see if I can rock these heels in a way that A) doesn’t break my ankles and B) doesn’t break someone else’s ankles when I inevitably fall into them. But I’m ready.
To get involved, YWCA is encouraging anyone 16 and older to register and set up a fundraising page. From there you can utilize social media tools to reach your contacts, family, friends, co-workers, and neighbors to further achieve your fundraising goals!
The success of this event depends on the fundraising efforts of all allies and advocates. It’s easy to raise money, so go for it!
The Meaning Behind The Mission
The event promotes how a collective community steps out for sexual violence as it affects all members of our community regardless of gender, sexuality, ethnicity, or age. But why this event? It’s all about showcasing a challenge, and working to overcome it: walking a mile in high heels a symbolic of the challenges faced every day by members of the community whose journey includes constant vigilance against the possibility of a sexual assault, violence in their home, or for some, their path of healing following an assault.
Walk A Mile In Her Shoes is not just happening in Lancaster, it’s an international event spanning countries all over the world. It began as a way for men to help raise awareness within their community to the sexual violence toward women. Today, there is an event greater stride to raise awareness of how sexual violence impacts all members of the community regardless of gender, sexuality, ethnicity, or age.
Many participants of the Walk A Mile In Her Shoes choose to wear high heels—this, over the course of the event’s history, was symbolic of both female empowerment and female subordination. Wearing a pair of high heels changes the way your walk, your stance, your perspective. They can lead you to feel uncomfortable and off-balance, or powerful and elevated. Choosing to walk in high heel shoes is symbolic of the challenges faced everyday by members of our community whose journey may consist of a constant threat or possibility of a sexual assault or of violence in their home, and for some, walking the path of healing following an assault.
