Artistic Anchors are the educational institutions in the City of Lancaster that provide a creative foundation for new ideas and innovation to thrive. • What: Käthe Kollwitz: Bauernkrieg/Peasant War – Gallery Talk by Phillip Earenfight, Dickinson College’s Director of the Trout Gallery and Associate Professor of Art and Art History

  • About: From 1903 to 1908, Käthe Kollwitz created plates for Bauernkrieg/Peasant War, a series of etchings that represents the brutal treatment of peasants in 16^th-century Germany, their rise to revolution and battle, and their subsequent humiliation and death.  Although based on historic events, she used this series as a vehicle to criticize and protest the anticipated tragedies that unfolded across Europe during the first half of the 20^th century.

  • About: The Reverie Actors Company presents the brilliantly witty madcap comedy, The Man Who Came to Dinner.  Filled with fascinating character roles and winking homage to the intellectual and popular culture of the 1930s, this beloved American classic features a famous houseguest who quickly wears out his welcome by wreaking havoc in the lives of his hosts.

  • About: The PA Dutch culture is pervasive in Lancaster County.  Did you notice? You may wonder why Lank-iss-tur is a thing.  You may be a descendant yourself if your name is anything like Martin. You may be a different kind of immigrant. So, who were these dreamers who settled our fertile lands? Who are the PA Dutch now? And what, pray tell, is scrapple? Join us for an enlightening evening, complete with a scrapple tasting and all the glorious aroma that goes with that!

• What: The Durang Dance Collective Presents A-Y Dancers

  • About: A-Y/dancers is an exciting new repertory dance company based in New York’s Hudson Valley. Their program features three choreographers who represent the past, present and future of American concert dance.  The program begins with a collage of solos, trios, and quartets by Merce Cunningham, one of the most celebrated choreographers of the 20th century. The second work is Doug Varone’s critically acclaimed 2003 work, “Of the Earth Far Below” a dynamic group dance featuring a cast of eight dancers against Steve Reich’s “Triple Quartet”. Completing the program will be a work by a Lancaster choreographer selected from the Durang Dance Collective’s choreographer’s showcase.

Let’s do something exceptional: Let’s learn, listen, and talk with civility. Wow, what a concept! Dan Spanjer is Chair of the Arts and Sciences Department and Professor of History at Lancaster Bible College. He earned his PhD at The University of Albany, SUNY and is a popular professor, effective teacher, and engaging presenter. He founded the Alcuin Society, a scholarly organization serving faculty.

• What: Artist Talk – Maria Dumlao, Mosaic Project Artist

  • About: Maria Dumlao, one of the 2018 PCA&D Mosaic Project artists, a visual artist working in various combined media, including film, video, sound, photography, and installation, was born in the Philippines and immigrated to the USA with her family. She received a BA in Studio Art & Art History from Rutgers College and a MFA in Studio Art at Hunter College-CUNY. Dumlao is currently an Associate Professor at Bucks County Community College. Since moving to Philadelphia in 2009, Dumlao has been involved in artist collectives including Vox Populi, where she is currently an artist member. Her recent work explores individual and collective history as viewed through lenses of history, popular culture, mythic folklore, landscapes, and creatures, and proposes alternatives to the systemic representations ordered by colonial narratives.

  • About: Kaitie Trout graduated from the Pennsylvania College of Art & Design in 2014. After graduation she moved to New York City to attend the MFA Design: The Designer as Author & Entrepreneur program at the School of Visual Arts where she created and pitched a design-driven venture.  Shortly after earning her Master’s degree in Design Trout, became a designer at Snapchat on the Sponsored Ad Product side where she created holistic campaigns for clients like Hollister, Maltesers, Heineken, Champions League, Under Armour and many others looking to utilize Snapchat’s unique ad platform. She also led the design for Sponsored Ad Products for the 2018 Winter Olympics on Snapchat and was responsible for creating the narrative used to pitch the Olympics Package on Snapchat to advertisers.  Trout now works as a Senior Designer at Ceros, a technology company which created a platform that gives designers and marketers the power to create, publish and analyze stunning interactive content for the web without writing a single line of code. Additionally, she is the New York City Brand Lead and Ambassador for all-natural sweetener company, The Base, which has a presence at Smorgasburg in NYC and Los Angeles and debuted at Coachella this year.   • About: A. D. Coleman has published 8 books and more than 2500 essays on photography and related subjects. Formerly a columnist for the Village Voice, theNew York Times, and the New York Observer, Coleman has contributed to such periodicals as ARTnews, Art On Paper, and Technology Review. His syndicated essays on mass media, new communication technologies, art, and photography have been featured in such periodicals as Juliet Art Magazine (Italy), European Photography (Germany), and Art Today (China). His work has been translated into 21 languages and published in 31 countries.
