Set in a Texas town near the U.S.–Mexico border, Lone Star begins with the discovery of a skeleton in the desert. What follows is part murder mystery, part family drama, and part meditation on American history. As Sheriff Sam Deeds investigates a decades-old crime, he uncovers buried truths about his father, his community, and the contested histories that shape life along the border. Following April’s screening of The Last Picture Show, Lone Star continues our three-film sequence on Community in the American Landscape. If Bogdanovich’s film asks what happens when a small town begins to disappear, Sayles’s film asks what happens when a community survives by burying parts of its past. As America approaches its 250th anniversary, Lone Star invites us to think about memory, myth, race, borders, belonging, and the stories communities tell about themselves. Join us for the film, a specialty cocktail pairing from Lancaster Distilleries, and a post-screening conversation.
